Town Manager Jim Malloy is excited to announce the appointment of Hemali Shah as the Town’s next Chief Equity Officer. Working in the Town Manager’s Office, Shah started in her role on October 31.
“We are grateful to have Hemali joining our office and leading the important initiatives that will improve equity in our community,” said Town Manager Jim Malloy. “Diversity, equity, and inclusion work is an on-going effort, and we look forward to having Hemali’s expertise as we continue to approach all of our decision-making with this in mind” he added.
“I am excited to be leading the Town’s DEI efforts in this role,” said Chief Equity Officer Hemali Shah. “Although I am new to this role, I am not new to Lexington, and I look forward to working with my colleagues and the community as we continue making progress towards our equity goals,” she added.
About the Role of Chief Equity Officer
As Chief Equity Officer, Shah will champion the Town’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. She will work with Town staff and community leaders to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture in Lexington. Shah will be working to identify regular antiracism and social inclusion training opportunities for employees, boards, and committees. She will also be developing ways to engage the community in an on-going, meaningful dialogue about social and racial equity and inclusion.
Another important component of this role involves identifying opportunities for building equity and inclusivity into Town policies, programs, services, and initiatives. She also will be developing strategies for recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce in Town government. Additionally, she will serve as the staff liaison to the Human Rights Committee and Commission on Disability.
The Town’s leadership has made racial and social equity a priority for the community, and is looking forward to advancing this important work under Shah’s leadership.
