Lexington's Battle Green is the location of the Battle of Lexington that took place on the morning of April 19, 1775. The Select Board manages the use of Battle Green consistent with its nature and history.
The flag on the Battle Green is authorized to be flown 24 hours a day year-round. The Select Board has authorized lowering the flag based on the Policy on Lowering the Battle Green Flag on the following occasions:

He was a very caring member of the Lexington Community who contributed his help whenever and wherever it was needed.

He was a member of the Sustainable Lexington Committee and the Greenway Corridors Committee and helped create ACROSS Lexington, which is a network of pedestrian and bicycle routes through open space and town streets that link many parts of the town.

Smith who was an original member of the Conservation Commission and responsible for helping to obtain many parcels of conservation land. He was also a member of the Board of Appeals and a Town Meeting Member for many years.
March 2, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Otis Brown, a former member of the Lexington Board of Selectmen and many other Town Committees over many years.
December 14, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of all the children and adults who lost their lives in a shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
October 14, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered for Margery Milne Battin's memorial service. She was the Town Moderator for 22 years, a leader in town government, and a passionate and staunch community organizer and advocate for over 60 years.
October 12, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Daniel Lucas, who was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran and also a member of Lexington Rotary Club, a former Town Meeting Member and the Fund for Lexington Board.
July 23-25, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered by Proclamation of President Obama and Governor Patrick in honor and respect of the victims of the violence on July 20, 2012 in Aurora, Colorado.
May 17, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Allan F. Kenney a longtime resident of Lexington. Mr. Kenney served on the Board for Selectmen from 1967-1976. Mr. Kenney served as Chairman during the bicentennial celebration of 1975 and presided on the Green when President Ford visited Lexington. He was a member of the Appropriations Committee and was the recipient of Lexington White Ticorn Hat in recognition of his service to the Town.
March 1, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Robert V. Whitman who served as a member of Town Meeting for 37 years. Mr. Whitman also served as chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Permanent Building Committee, and most recently, of the Residents' Association at Brookhaven.
February 23-24, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Richard L. Bechtela longtime resident of Lexington. Mr. Bechtel was a member of the Historic Districts Commission from 1994-1999.
December 19, 2011- The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Paul Riffin who served as a member of Town Meeting for 19 years. Mr. Riffin also served as Conservation Commissioner and coordinator of Lexington's Community Gardens for 25 years.
December 15, 2011 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Mary McDonough, who worked for the Town of Lexington for 45 years, from 1941-1986. Ms. McDonough served as Town Clerk from 1968 until her retirement in 1986.
