Under the Zoning By-Law, the Board of Appeals issues special permits for use of property, grants variances from dimensional requirements of the By-Law, and hears appeals from decisions of the Building Commissioner.
Before being considered for full membership to the Board of Appeals, Associate Members must:
- Serve as an associate for at least 2 years
- Fulfill an 8-year residency requirement
- Have significant experience and activity in related town affairs
- Have no major land holding interest in Lexington

- Hear and decide petitions for zoning variances
