Do you use the Minuteman Bikeway? In the spirit of improving the user experience on the Minuteman Bikeway, a Recreational Trails Program grant is underwriting a review of the Minuteman Bikeway on behalf of the towns of Arlington, Bedford, and Lexington. The Town of Lexington is administering the grant on behalf of the three towns. Toole Design Group (TDG) was hired this summer and is now beginning its review of current conditions on and near the 10-plus miles of the Bikeway.
They have also developed a two-page user to gather opinions about trail signage (on and near the Bikeway), intersection crossings, and trailside amenities. And there's room at the end of the survey for more general comments. Please take a few minutes to fill out the questionnaire. Your experience, opinions and suggestions are very important to this effort.
The Town included a Safer Roads in Lexington flyer in this month's tax bill. The flyer describes bicycle markings and signage on Lexington streets and outlines State laws for cyclists and motorists.
One sentence in the flyer needs to be clarified. It says, "Motorists must yield to oncoming bicyclists making a left turn." The actual State law requires vehicles turning left to yield to oncoming vehicles, including bicycles – thus the statement should read, "Motorists making a left turn must yield to oncoming bicyclists."

What are these new markings on Worthen Road & Spring Street?
Sharrows! - short for
"shared lane pavement markings."
|
 |
The image of a bicycle with a series of chevrons indicates that motorists and cyclists are to share the travel lane.
Under Massachusetts General Law,
a bicyclist may use the full traffic lane
in order to avoid car doors, debris, bad
pavement, or other hazards.
